Wartime Romances v1 #1, 1951 - In "Make-Believe Marriage", an ambitious girl commits identity fraud to secure a well-paying job. "Lovelife of an Army Nurse" chronicles a young nurse during the Korean War. Plotting to find an officer husband. she instead gets sent to the front lines during an emergency. Splendid figure drawing permeates much of
Matt Baker's artwork. Both tales in this
first issue are lovingly drawn, but the latter tale has more interesting panel and page layouts. Both stories (reprinted later in
Diary Secrets #25) show the artist's further development from an earlier work, "I Tried to Burn the Candle at Both Ends" (first published in
Teen-Age Diary Secrets / Blue Ribbon Comics v2 #4). Baker's terrific cover caps this issue, the first of a series that combines the war and romance genres. This issue also includes artwork by Chuck Miller. This is 1 of 18
