Amazing Spider-man v1 #1, 1963 - After a wildly successful premiere in
Amazing Fantasy #15, this
first issue begins Spider-man's first series. Peter Parker, desperate for money, tries to cash in on his new super-hero persona.
Steve Ditko employs an opening splash and two large panel chapter headings, balancing out the more numerous smaller panels. Layouts are varied and well designed. In the second tale, Spider-man's financial opportunities dwindle, leading him to solicit membership in the
Fantastic Four. Ditko does a splendidly roomy first page, but the remaining pages quickly adhere to a busy nine-panel grid. While a tad monotonous, the artist compensates with quirky yet distinctive drawings. Ditko's cover collaboration with
Jack Kirby nicely captures the heroes' first moment of contact. Note also that the issue contains the first retelling of Spider-man's origin and the first appearance of the
Chameleon. Spider-Man" was later reprinted in
Amazing Spider-man annual #2. Written by Stan Lee, this is 1 of 38
Amazing Spider-Man issues by
Ditko and 1 of 2 Amazing Spider-Man issues by
Kirby. ///
