Gorgo #1 - Steve Ditko art

Gorgo v1 #1, 1961 - Based on the MGM monster movie, this premiere issue tells of gargantuan reptile that runs amok through civilization. Gorgo, perhaps a remnant of the dinosaurs, awakes and emerges from the sea in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption. Steve Ditko begins with a stupendous splash page of the monster, wreaking havoc in London through a flurry of fighter jets. Each page is magnificently drawn, even within the confines of a six panel grid. Panels are full of meticulous drawings, each finely detailed and textured. Perhaps the most artful scenes are those sequences without dialogue, allowing purely the visuals to tell the story (see interior page below). This outstanding Ditko effort rivals his best Atlas and Charlton works of the 1960s. This is number 1 of 9 Gorgo issues with Ditko art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Ditko or Gorgo issues.
