Unknown Soldier #255 - Walt Simonson art, Joe Kubert cover

Joe Kubert
Unknown Soldier v1 #255, 1981 - The Captain Fear story opens with a massive cannon as a focal point. It's muzzle gives the illusion of extending out into the reader's space (see interior page below). Walt Simonson brilliantly uses this technique to quickly establish the historical era and setting. This second back-up story by the artist is as impressive as his first, rife with well planned page designs and action sequences. This story was later reprinted in The Art of Walt Simonson. Joe Kubert's cover is adequate, one of many such works during this era. This is number 2 of 3 Unknown Soldier issues with Simonson art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Simonson, Kubert or Unknown Soldier issues. See also this blog's Kubert checklist or Simonson checklist.
