Champions #17 - John Byrne art

The Champions v1 #17, 1978 - This eclectic team book ends with this issue. George Tuska, who did many of the earlier issues, returns to pencil this final story, with John Byrne providing the inks. A double page spread and two splash pages offer wide opportunities but are only passably drawn. The layouts are mediocre and fail have a maximum impact. Byrne's inks give the art continuity from his previous issues and generally enhance the pencils. The damaged machinery from the fallen Sentinels (pages 23, 30) is exquisitely drawn. Interestingly, this may be the only bronze age example of Byrne inking another artist's pencils. Other artists in this issue include Ernie Chua (cover). This is number 6 of 6 Champions issues with Byrne art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Byrne or Champions issues. See also this blog's Byrne checklist.
