Web of Horror v1 #1, 1969 - This black and white series sought to compete with Warren horror magazines at the time, featuring early work by several upcoming artists. This
first issue opens with an early, yet credible
Jeff Jones cover. The two figures are trapped not only the octopus-like arms, but by the overabundance of text. The illustration repeats itself on the back cover (sans text) with more pleasing results. The purchase of an occult fantasy game begins the sole
Bernie Wrightson story. His brushwork is beautiful throughout, despite many small crowded panels. His inside front cover art fares much better due to tighter execution and roominess. This issue also includes art by Wayne Howard, Syd Shores and Donald Norman. This is 1 of 3
