8.  Strange Tales v1 #167 featuring Nick Fury & Doctor Strange, 1968 - As S.h.i.e.l.d. agents burst into his secret complex, the Yellow Claw flees to a hyper-dimensional realm (but not only of Nick Fury's reach). Optical effects abound in this Jim Steranko effort, suggesting advanced technologies (see interior page below). The patterns and textures nicely complement the artist's own intense drawings. An intricately designed two-page spread serves as the finale, but this is surpassed by the story's beginning. Four splashes in a row comprise a single panoramic scene. Magnificently detailed and composed, the image also includes all of Fury's supporting characters. Similarly, Steranko's flag-themed cover is considered a classic to many (compare this to Shield #2). Other artists in this issue include Dan Adkins. This is 17 of 18 Strange Tales issues by Steranko. /// Top 10 Steranko comics / Steranko gallery
