Jim Starlin |
8. Captain Marvel v2 #31, 1974 - Jim Starlin deftly assembles a contingent of nine heroes on this colorful cover. Cap, his allies and the Avengers try to stop Thanos from elevating himself to godhood. The artist uses a wide variety of layouts, customized for the needs of each scene. His recap of the ongoing storyline (page 10) is impeccably concise and masterfully designed despite the small panels. The splash page of the shackled entity Kronos (page 16) conveys a dramatic futility while a raging telepathic mind war (page 27) suggests an almost psychedelic experience. Smaller details, such as inventive spacecraft on page 15 and the high technology framing the battle on page 23 further contribute to one of Starlin's finest works of the bronze age. This story was later reprinted in Life of Captain Marvel #4. This is 7 of 12 Captain Marvel v2 issues by Starlin. /// Top 10 Starlin comics / Starlin gallery
