House of Mystery #179 - Neal Adams art & cover, Bernie Wrightson art (1st pro work)

Neal Adams
House of Mystery v1 #179, 1969 - In Bernie Wrightson's first professional comics work, a mystery surrounds a man who disappears without a trace. Though only three pages, the art is skillful and conscientious, despite being a young artist (this story was later reprinted in House of Mystery #228). Neal Adams follows his eerily monochromatic cover with the tale of an ambitious sailor and his faithful wife. The drawings are thoughtfully laid out, but the overall artwork is generally weak. Sadly, Joe Orlando's erratic inks have little compatibility with Adams' pencils. This story was later reprinted in Limited Collectors' Edition #C-23. Other artists in this issue include Jerry Grandenetti and George Roussos. This is number 5 of 26 House of Mystery issues with Adams art and/or covers and number 1 of 27 House of Mystery issues with Wrightson art and/or covers (not including reprints).
