Captain America #113 - Jim Steranko art & cover

Captain America v1 #113, 1969 - This tragically themed cover has a horror genre feel as opposed to a superhero comic. A devastated Rick Jones lies at the base of Captain America's memorial statue while Hydra agents close in. Jim Steranko arguably produces his best issue of the title, aided by the superlative inks of Tom Palmer. There are many exceptional panels and pages, including Madame Hydra's broken reflection on page four, the exquisite sequence with Thor's hammer on page six and the typographic sound effect on page seventeen. Steranko's phenomenal drawing for the center spread echos the setting and mood on the cover. The issue's best page, however may be the splash of Cap fighting courageously against a mountain of agents (see interior page below). This story was first reprinted in Captain America Special Edition #2. This is number 3 of 3 Captain America issues with Steranko art and/or covers.
