Jerry Grandenetti |
G.I. Combat v1 #82, 1960 - Crawling through a barrage of mortars, an army sergeant fires while dragging a fellow soldier on his back. His face is unfazed by the explosions, determined to make it through. Yet another one of Jerry Grandenetti's ink and wash covers seeks to depict the more brutal aspects of war. Stylistically, it reminds me of the painter Edvard Munch and other pre-WWII Expressionists. Note how his gunfire illuminates the entire foreground. This is but one of several war covers memorably drawn by Grandenetti. Other artists in this issue include Jack Abel and Irv Novick. /// select Grandenetti cover
