Strange Suspense Stories v2 #22, 1954 - By candlelight, a grotesque man opens a mysterious, decorative box.
Steve Ditko often used distorted faces for his early horror comics. Although there's no background, plenty of details abound. Most obvious is the ornamentation of the box and the textures throughout. Aided by the rich coloration, Ditko's succeeds in presenting a horrific yet distinctive image. Other artists in this golden age comic include Dick Giordano, Vince Alascia, Leon Winik and Ray Osrin.
