Gil Kane |
Champions v1 #1, 1975 - Greek mythological characters invade UCLA campus, seeking to capture both Hercules and Venus. Coincidentally, the Black Widow, Ghost Rider, Angel and Iceman just happen to be at the sprawling campus for separate reasons. They soon enter the fray, fighting harpies, mutates and even Cerberus himself. Eventually they form a new superhero team, the first based on the west coast. Responsible for many Marvel covers during the bronze age,
Gil Kane was especially good in this case. With Hercules as the focal point, other
Champions are flanked around him, fitting perfectly in the remaining spaces. His excellent layout for this
first issue curiously omits the sixth member Venus. This Tony Isabella story was forgettably drawn by Don Heck and Mike Esposito. ///
