Batman v1 #401, 1989 - Men dressed as the Batman are being murdered in Gotham while the real caped crusader is out of the country. John Byrne writes the first of a three-part mystery, while drawing only the covers. The image of a knife through the cowl is arresting, strengthened by a strong radial layout. Other artists in this copper age comic include Jim Aparo.
