| Our Army at War #83 |

Our Army at War v1 #83, 1959 - Sgt. Rock makes his first full appearance, fighting alongside another GI nicknamed "the Wall". Joe Kubert cleverly employs open panels for a series of vignettes (see interior page below), building up awareness of the character. These scenes lead to his depiction on the page's last panel. The artist consistently shows a high degree of craft and detail throughout the eleven page story. Kubert's opening splash is a variation of Jerry Grandenetti's cover, but far superior. Written by Robert Kanigher, this story was later reprinted in 80 Page Giant #7 and Our Army at War #280. This issue also includes artwork by Mort Drucker, Ross Andru and Mike Esposito.
