Witzend v1 #5, 1968 - Past the rebellious cover of an elephant's behind, this fanzine features the second chapter of the World of the Wizard King, a fantasy text story lushly illustrated by Wally Wood. This is one of the few works I've seen where the artist employs more linework and cross-hatching. It certainly makes the comic fan in me pine for more. Wood's "Pipsqueak Papers" in the same issue is more recognizable in style, but no less well drawn. Jim Steranko supplies three full page portraits of Talon, his own barbarian creation of the late silver age. Heroically composed and rendered, his approach matches his Marvel covers of the early 1970s. Other artists in this issue include Reed Crandall. This is 5 of 10 Witzend issues by Wood and 1 of 1 Witzend issues by Steranko.
