Witzend #4 - Wally Wood art & cover, Steve Ditko, Frank Frazetta art

Wally Wood
Witzend v1 #4, 1968 - Filled with original stories and previously unpublished works, this fanzine boasts some exceptional artwork. Although Wally Wood's cover is lackluster, he delivers two humorous fantasy tales and text illustrations that are competently drawn in his eclectic style. Interestingly, his sketches on "The World of the Wizard King" shed more light on the artist's process more than anything else. The lengthiest story features Mr. A, a creation of Steve Ditko that touts his objectivist philosophies. It is exceptionally drawn. Designed to work in black and white, the artist employs fine lines and other details to compensate for the lack of color. Solid black borders frame the scenes while supplying a cohesive structure. Frank Frazetta rounds out the book with a superb Edgar Rice Burroughs Pellucidar illustration. Other artists in this issue include Reed Crandall and Roger Brand. This is 2 of 5 Witzend issues by Ditko, 4 of 5 Witzend issues by Frazetta and 4 of 10 Witzend issues by Wood.
