Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #174 - Carl Barks art & cover

Carl Barks
Walt Disney's Comics and Stories v1 #174, 1955 - With the aid of a fan-propelled ice boat, Donald Duck gets the job of delivering mail to an island on the lake. While Carl Barks' cover is disappointingly simplistic, his interior story is excellent. His large opening panel establishes the setting quickly, while his fluid drawings set the pace. In the interior page below, Barks shows how the delivery of a package of white rats quickly unravels. This story was later reprinted in Walt Disney Comics Digest #20 and >Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #475. Other artists in this issue include Paul Murry. This is 134 of 280 Walt Disney's Comics and Stories issues by Barks.

Surely the cover illustration for WDC 174 couldn't be a Barks work. Everything is OK except for the ill-fitting and silly head on Donald. Perhaps the Barks original had been damaged so someone else has filled in (and wrecked) his design.

Interesting observation. I still think its Barks but I agree that Donald's head is a little off.
