Frank Frazetta |
Eerie v3 #8, 1967 - A scholar unearths an ancient sword from a remote mountain, wreaking havoc on those around him when he returns. Thanks to
Steve Ditko's skillfulness, characters' faces and figures are superbly modeled. His use of gray washes is beautifully applied, increasing depth and interest in every panel. One of his many exceptional works on this series, this particular tale was reprinted in both >
Eerie v3 #17 and
#135.
Frank Frazetta's related cover is even better. The painting's near-symmetrical layout conveys both boldness and simplicity. Color is relegated to the pulsating brain in the background. Among Frazetta fans, this image is among his most iconic. Other artists in this bronze age magazine include Gene Colan and Angelo Torres. This is 6 of 8
