Shock Suspenstories v1 #6, 1953 - Venturing into the woods at night, a reporter witnesses the brutal flaying of a woman by a hooded mob. In this obvious reference to the Klu Klux Klan,
Wally Wood illustrates the tale with appropriate menace and severity. The woman's beauty and femininity seem to contrast directly against the brutality of her attackers. The story is powerfully drawn, but the artist's cover is even more so. The scene is lusciously detailed, from the ruffles of the victim's dress to the foliage in the background. This cover is among Wood's best work, regardless of decade. Other artists in this golden age comic include Graham Ingels, Jack Kamen and Joe Orlando. This is 5 of 14
