Vault of Horror v1 #37, 1954 - Hired as a caretaker, Mr. Dench spends the night alone in the decrepit mansion he now has to call home. Al Williamson illustrates a depressingly dark setting, rife with shadows and cobwebs  (see interior page above). Eerie lighting is prevalent throughout the pages, drawn with great skill and sensitivity. The opening splash displays a distant view of the haunted house, an iconic image nearly perfect in its rendition. Angelo Torres is often credited as the inker, but the artwork suggests Williamson's hand as well. This is the artist's only story on the series, and a seminal work at that. Other artists in this golden age comic include Johnny Craig, Jack Davis, Will Elder and Graham Ingels.
