Batman #353 - Don Newton art

Batman v1 #354, 1982 - A pair of con men bilk a worthy charity, making a fool out of Robin in the process. This back-up story is adequately drawn by Don Newton, apparently taking a break from the main feature. On the opening splash, the Batman is pummeled by his alter ego, "Matches" Malone. Despite the roominess, the layout somewhat misses its mark. Dennis Jensen's inking is largely faithful to the pencils, in a surprisingly similar style. Still, the overall work falls just below Newton's usually high standards. The cover and main story (featuring the Joker) is drawn by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez. This is number 9 of 34 Batman issues with Newton art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Newton or Batman issues. See also this blog's Newton checklist.
