Alpha Flight #6 - John Byrne art & cover

John Byrne
Alpha Flight v1 #6, 1984 - Accidentally freed by the digging of an oil rig, one of the ancient beasts of Native American legend is resurrected. Snowbird, Alpha Flight's most mysterious member, must contain him or die trying. John Byrne's minimal cover foreshadows his artwork inside. During a battle within a snowstorm, the artist boldly omits all imagery, relying on the narration, dialogue and sound effects to tell the story. The approach is clever and admittedly effective (see interior page below). Byrne does eventually transition back into conventional illustrations, but deserves kudos for his experimentation. In a separate tale, the origin of Shaman concludes. This is number 6 of 28 Alpha Flight issues with Byrne art and/or covers.
