Star Spangled War Stories v1 #160, 1970 - Rescued at sea by the Japanese army, the Unknown Soldier takes on the role of a cryptographer who cracks under torture and provides valuable intelligence. The opening splash combines illustration, photography and streams of morse code to form a compelling image. Joe Kubert follows up with an exceptional double-page spread of the actual rescue and capture. Subsequent pages feature thoughtful sequences filled with gritty, impactful drawings. His cover (only vaguely resembling the interior story) is drawn with far less effort. Other artists in this bronze age comic include Russ Heath and Sam Glanzman. This is 60 of 96
