X-Men v1 #1, 1963 - Afters years of training, the students of Professor Charles Xavier get their first baptism of fire. The rogue mutant Magneto takes over a US military base, forcing the hand of Cyclops (Scott Summers), Angel (Warren Worthington), Iceman (Bobby Drake), Marvel Girl (Jean Grey) and Beast (Hank McCoy). Jack Kirby's iconic cover fits the characters into a neatly organized layout. His minimal background puts more emphasis on the figures. His inside story art expertly introduces the main characters, bringing their personalities and abilities to the fore. A school exercise on pages 3-4 foreshadows their elaborate, mechanized Danger Room. Kirby's visualizations of the team would evolve, but his initial efforts remain memorable. This Stan Lee story was later reprinted in Amazing Adventures v4 #1 and #2. - - - - - - - - - -
