Racket Squad in Action v1 #11 - Steve Ditko golden age crime comic book cover art
Steve Ditko
Racket Squad in Action v1 #11, 1954 - In this early Steve Ditko tale, a mobster forces a fine artist in participating in a nefarious scheme. Like much of his 1950s work, the faces of his characters (especially villains) are often distorted. Some are expressive and distinctive, but most look painfully primitive and amateurish. He shows no lack of effort on backgrounds and other minute details. Ditko's cover uses creative symbolism to directly tie-in to the feature story. Note the weight and volume of the gangster's hand and how the smoking gun leads the eye back to the masthead. Other artists in this golden age crime comic include John Belfi. This is 1 of 2 Racket Squad in Action issues by Ditko.
