New Gods v1 #7, 1972 - Interestingly, Jack Kirby diverts from the ongoing storyline to delve into the past. An earlier war between New Genesis and Apokolips results in a truce, and an exchange of two boys who would later become Orion and Scott Free. Steppenwolf makes his first appearance as a toady to Darkseid. An idyllic opening splash quickly gives way to a violent battle. The subsequent double-page spread reveals its progression into all-out war between good and evil. More than midway throughout the series, Kirby's work maintains its energy and creativity. This story was later reprinted in New Gods v2 #4. A short back-up tale features Vykin the Black (of the Forever People), while this issue's golden age reprint stars Manhunter (from Adventure Comics #76). This is 7 of 11 New Gods issues by Kirby. /// key 1st appearance Steppenwolf / Kirby gallery

Jack was declining at this point. Replacing Vince Colletta with Mike Royer just compounded the problem as Vince had artistic sensibilities that Royer lacked, faithfully inking Kirby's pencil lines that were becoming muddy and generally out of whack.
