New Gods v1 #7, 1972 - Interestingly, Jack Kirby diverts from the ongoing storyline to delve into the past. An earlier war between New Genesis and Apokolips results in a truce, and an exchange of two boys who would later become Orion and Scott Free. Steppenwolf makes his first appearance as a toady to Darkseid. An idyllic opening splash quickly gives way to a violent battle. The subsequent double-page spread reveals its progression into all-out war between good and evil. More than midway throughout the series, Kirby's work maintains its energy and creativity. This story was later reprinted in New Gods v2 #4. A short back-up tale features Vykin the Black (of the Forever People), while this issue's golden age reprint stars Manhunter (from >Adventure Comics #76). This is 7 of 11 New Gods issues by Kirby. /// key 1st appearance Steppenwolf / Kirby gallery
