Iron Man v1 #109, 1978 - John Byrne's first Iron Man cover appears oddly off balance, even with the heavily tilted horizon. Three figures cram into the layout, leaving little room for dialogue or text. The villain's foreground leg looks disproportionately small in relation to the rest of his body. Terry Austin's inks shine, but Byrne's effort is decidedly clumsy. This bronze age comic marks the first appearance of the Vanguard. This issue also includes artwork by Carmine Infantino and Fred Kida. This is 1 of 4 Iron Man issues by Byrne. /// key 1st appearance, 1st cover Vanguard
