X-Men v1 #136, 1980 - After traversing the galaxy, Phoenix returns to Earth in time for a final confrontation with the X-men. Her immeasurable power drives her to the brink of insanity, deftly visualized by John Byrne. Her battles with individual teammates are particularly good, all expertly drawn and choreographed. Terry Austin's inking is second to none. Byrne's pieta-like cover suggests the consequences and tragedy of Jean Grey's transformation.
