Sherlock Holmes v2 #1 - Walt Simonson cover + 1st issue

Walt Simonson

Sherlock Holmes v2 #1, 1975
- Adapting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Final Problem", this first issue appears to have been part of DC's adventure genre wave during the mid-1970s. The Denny O'Neil script was drawn by E. R. Cruz. Walt Simonson contributes a cover that seems inappropriately cartoonish. The style suggests it was drawn perhaps a few years earlier than the 1975 publication date. The inclusion of the killer's shadow behind Dr. Watson, while not original, adds a key point of interest to the layout. This is 1 of 1 Sherlock Holmes issues by Simonson. /// key 1st issue

I have this issue, and it's a nice little read. Shame it didn't go any further.

About the same time, DC did an issue of The Joker featuring an actor believing himself to be Sherlock (and dressed like the Holmes of this story) hunting The Joker, whom he believes to be Moriarty!
Also at the same time, Marvel did their own Sherlock, but in black-and-white in a two-issue adaptation of Hound of the Baskervilles
