Doomsday +1 #1 - John Byrne art & cover

John Byrne
Doomsday Plus One v1 #1, 1975 - One of John Byrne's earliest works is this sci-fi post-apocalyptic series. A team of astronauts returns to Earth after a nuclear war, not too dissimilarly from the Planet of the Apes films. The large panels and free flowing layouts have the spontaneity and appeal of a budding young comic book artist. Page five (see interior page below) nicely captures the destruction and aftermath of war within only three concise panels. The full page splash of an attacking mammoth (page 13) is one of Byrne's most exciting scenes. His figure drawing overall is primitive, but hints at his future potential. This is number 1 of 6 Doomsday +1 issues with Byrne art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Byrne or Doomsday +1 issues. See also this blog's Byrne checklist.

  1. Wow, this looks really cool. I've never heard of these books. I'm going to have to hunt these issues down at this years ECCC.
