Conan the Barbarian v1 #9, 1971 - A winged devil holds Conan's female companion hostage within a glittering tower. Barry Smith's drawings continue to mature and progress, evolving into his own unique style. Conan's silent approach on page 11 (see interior page below) is a decent attempt at building suspense through visuals alone. The battle scenes that follow are appropriately physical and brutal. Despite some issues with the perspective, Smith's finely adorned cover is among his best of the bronze age period. The story adapts Robert E. Howard's "The Garden of Fear". This is 9 of 20 Conan the Barbarian issues with Smith. /// Smith gallery / original unpublished cover
