Iron Man #47 - Barry Windsor Smith art

Iron Man #47
Iron Man v1 #47, 1972 - Iron Man's origin from Tales of Suspense #39 is retold, primarily as a lengthy flashback. Barry Smith's layouts are a tad clumsy and his figure drawings stiff, especially compared to his other bronze age works. His pencils are further tamed by the dull, conservative inking. Still, there are a few scenes where Smith excels. On page 20, Iron Man reflects upon his past while his own reflection appears superimposed on his old armor. Smith's second splash page recalls the moment the hero first powers up, creating an indelible image for readers (see interior page below). Other artists in this Marvel bronze age superhero comic include Gil Kane (cover). This is number 1 of 3 Iron Man issues with Smith art and/or covers.
