Jim Steranko |
5. Nick Fury, Agent of S.h.i.e.l.d. v1 #3, 1968 - A horror-themed issue, Nick Fury is called to Scotland to investigate some mysterious happenings in a medieval castle. Jim Steranko's cover is frighteningly gothic, juxtaposing several elements in a loosely triangular layout. Especially effective is Fury's face incorporated into the ominous background. Inside, the artist places two double page spreads for maximum effect. The first (pages 2-3) is innovative in its graphic minimalism and use of the title typography as panel sequences. The second (pages 12-13) is hauntingly surreal in its composition and skewed perspective. Steranko's best issue of the series finds a perfect complement in Dan Adkins' superb inking. This story was later reprinted in Nick Fury, Agent of Shield v2 #2. This is 3 of 7 Nick Fury, Agent of Shield issues by Steranko. /// Top 10 Steranko comics / Steranko gallery / original cover / original page
