Jack Kirby

Kamandi v1 #5, 1973 - After taking over Las Vegas, a tiger army uses Kamandi for sport in their makeshift arena. Jack Kirby pits boy against gorilla on this superbly detailed cover. Their vast size difference puts emphasis on the ape's considerable advantage. Inside, three splashes contribute to the pacing and aesthetic. Kirby's two-page spread is a complex layout of two fiercely combating forces. Flower makes her first appearance, providing a female companion for the title character. This is 5 of 40 Kamandi issues by Kirby.
