Plop v1 #1, 1973 - Basil Wolverton's "Arms" Armstrong sets the tone for DC's unabashedly weird humor series. This Golden Age comics veteran illustrates the first several covers, each with a different disturbingly odd character. Sergio Aragones, longtime Mad magazine artist, not only designs the cover's border, but contributes framing pages and an excellent story ("The Plague") in this first issue. Bernie Wrightson's tale of a gourmet who gorges himself on frog's legs is the artistic high point of the book. A mix of the horror and humor genres, the artwork is crisply rendered with special attention to highlights and shadows. His brushwork is exceptional throughout and the page layouts more inventive than usual. On the final page, Wrightson places himself as a patron sitting at the diner counter. This story was later reprinted in Welcome Back to the House of Mystery #1, Best of DC #60, Masterworks Series of Great Comic Book Artists #3 and Berni Wrightson: A Look Back. This issue also includes artwork by George Evans and Alfredo Alcala.
