Batman v1 #221, 1970 - Arguably his best Batman cover, Neal Adams' carefully designed layout accentuates both height and distance. The flurry of bats lead the eye from Batman's foreground figure to his pursuers below. The lit torches below produce warm highlights on the hero's face and shoulders. Visually stunning, Adams' illustration even works with the kitschy masthead of that era. Other artists in this bronze age comic include Irv Novick and Dick Giordano.
