Tarzan #39 - Russ Manning art (1st Manning Brothers of the Spear)

Tarzan v1 #39, 1952 - Arriving in his ancestral land his brother Natongo, Dan-El learns about his origins. This Brothers of the Spear back-up tale is the start of an exceptionally long run by Russ Manning. While his drawings are decidedly better than previous Tarzan issues, the artist still struggles with pacing and layout. Many faces, figures and settings appear overworked in detail. Manning would later abandon this style and opt for a simpler, streamlined approach. This is number 1 of 132 Tarzan issues with Manning art and/or covers (not including reprints). See today's posts or more Manning or Tarzan issues. See also this blog's Manning checklist.
