1984 (magazine) v1 #9, 1979 - In
Alex Nino's first of two stories, space travelers investigate a planetary anomaly between Mars and Jupiter. The artist employs both air-brushing and textural linework throughout, culminating in an climactic splash on page 17. The influence of European artists (such as Moebius) is clear. Even better is Nino's second tale, a science fiction homage to Al Capp's Schmoo. The series of four double-page spreads is stunning, optimally designed for black-and-white. This is Nino at his most innovative, pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. "Break Even" was later reprinted in
1994 #23. Other artists in this bronze age magazine include Jess Jodloman and Frank Springer. This is 9 of 10
