Frontline Combat #8 - Wally Wood, Alex Toth art

Frontline Combat v1 #8, 1952 - Wally Wood's lavishly detailed story chronicles the life of Julius Caesar. In the first scene, the artist depicts him in heroic yet majestic fashion. Subsequent pages are overflowing with Roman regalia and weaponry. By contrast, Alex Toth's tale of a fighter pilot during the Korean War is quietly spare (see interior page below). Panels are open and spacious, appropriate enough given the theme. Both stories were later reprinted in Frontline Combat v2 #8. Other artists in this issue include Jack Davis, John Severin and Harvey Kurtzman (cover). This is number 1 of 2 Frontline Combat issues with Toth art and/or covers and number 7 of 13 Frontline Combat issues with Wood art and/or covers.
