House of Mystery #255 - Bernie Wrightson cover, Alex Nino art

House of Mystery #255, 1977 - This Bernie Wrightson cover has a style that suggests it was done years earlier than the publication date. The color palette is a bit loud for my tastes, but the brushwork is superb. "Bed of Roses", a story about a homely heiress and her duplicitous husband, is a typically fine effort by Alex Nino. His opening panel of her parent's burial is rough textured and a bit confusing, emphasizing one of the gravediggers rather than the coffins or the heiress herself. Still, his final large panel of an ornate Victorian bed and the overall design and pacing of the pages help to offset this. Gray Morrow also makes a contribution in this collection of all new stories. This is number 26 of 27 House of Mystery issues with Wrightson art and/or covers and number 12 of 14 House of Mystery issues with Nino art and/or covers.
