Jack Kirby
New Gods v1 #10, 1972 - Mantis and his legions of humanoid "bugs" begin their invasion of Earth via the Boom Tube. Nearing the end of the series, Jack Kirby produces an outstanding bronze age effort. On the spacious two-page spread, Mantis emerges from his cocoon in eerie, vampire-like fashion. Three splash pages are interspersed throughout the story, serving as dramatic pauses in the pacing. The artwork builds, then culminates in spectacular splash on page 16. Kirby shows two scenes in a single page, pitting Orion against Mantis above and Forager fending off insect minions below. The spectacular display is the artist at his best. This story was later reprinted in New Gods v2 #5. Interestingly, the last page has a small ad for Kirby's upcoming series The Demon. This is 10 of 11 New Gods issues by Kirby. /// Kirby gallery
