New Gods #5 - Jack Kirby art, cover & reprint

New Gods v1 #5, 1971 - A photo montage background quietly opens this book, a technique Jack Kirby often used during the late 1960s to early 1970s. Mike Royer takes over as inker and the results are immediately telling. The following two page spread and three subsequent splashes are stunning in scale and texture. Royer's inks seem to stay true to the original pencils more so than Kirby's other bronze age inkers. Curiously, the story is followed by Kirby himself introducing a golden age Manhunter reprint, except that it's a new Young Gods of Supertown story that ties in with the series. This short tale is one of Vince Colletta's last efforts on New Gods. This is number 5 of 11 New Gods issues with Kirby art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Kirby or New Gods issues.
