House of Mystery #247 - Steve Ditko art

House of Mystery #247, 1976 - A big game hunter travels to India, only to have a curse put upon him. Steve Ditko gets the opportunity to draw a plethora of wild animals, and his elephants are surprisingly good. Interestingly, his normally graphic pencils are softened by inker Wayne Howard, a frequent Charlton contributor whose style emulated Wally Wood. The issue also include a Neal Adams full page ad for CBS Saturday morning cartoons. This is number 2 of 6 House of Mystery issues with Ditko art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Ditko or House of Mystery issues. See also this blog's Ditko checklist.

Do you happen to know who did the cover? I really dig it.

I'm not as familiar with artists not showcased here, but during the mid 1970s DC primarily used Filipino artists for their covers (cheaper to outsource). Looking at the figures, my guess would be either Ernie Chan (Filipino) or Bill Draut (not Filipino). Anyone else out there want to weigh in?

Grand Comics Database lists Jack Sparling (Pencils) and Vince Colletta (Inks). For comparison check out Sparling's Fighting Cave-Females panel at lambiek: http://lambiek.net/artists/s/sparling_jack.htm (primitive woman had not yet invented the top of the bikini).
