Superman Annual #9 - Alex Toth art

Superman Annual #9, 1983 - Perhaps originally intended for World's Finest, Superman and Batman join forces against Lex Luthor. While there's plenty of action throughout the tale, there is a light-hearted, almost comic tone as well. Alex Toth's graphic yet approachable art works well within this context. Some of the characters' clothing and hairstyles look outdated, suggesting this tale was completed much earlier. Inker Terry Austin's linework is fairly thick in some areas, but remains largely faithful to the pencils. A double-page spread also occurs on pages 3-4, a rarity for Toth. Other artists in this issue include Curt Swan and Gil Kane (cover). This is number 1 of 1 Superman Annual issues with Toth art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Toth or Superman issues.
