Witching Hour v1 #3, 1969 - In one of Bernie Wrightson's earliest works, a man is transported to another world to fight an army. Page layouts vary wildly, but each panel showcases his exceptional brushwork. Wrightson puts special attention on shadows and modeling faces (see interior page below). Alex Toth does similarly well on the first three framing pages, but falters on his interior story. His tale of a despotic ruler and his precious wheel is erratically paced and drawn. One bright spot is the splendid Mike Sekowsky / Nick Cardy cover. Perfect in both drawing and composition, it sets the tone for the rest of the series. Other artists in this silver age comic include Jack Sparling. - - - - - - - - - -
