Iron Man #109 - John Byrne cover

John Byrne
Iron Man v1 #109, 1978 - John Byrne's first Iron Man cover appears oddly off balance, even with the heavily tilted horizon. Three figures cram into the layout, leaving little room for dialogue or text. The Vanguard's foreground leg looks disproportionately small in relation to the rest of his body. Terry Austin's inks shine, but Byrne's effort is decidedly clumsy. Other artists in this issue include Carmine Infantino and Fred Kida. This is number 1 of 4 Iron Man issues with Byrne art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Byrne or Iron Man issues. See also this blog's Byrne checklist.
