Planet of the Apes #1 - Mike Ploog art + 1st issue

Planet of the Apes #1

Planet of the Apes v1 #1, 1974 - Based on the science fiction films, this first issue combines new stories along with articles and movie stills. In the opening tale, the community leader known as the Lawgiver takes a sudden leave of absence, just as ape supremacists begin to dismantle the peace. Mike Ploog does his first of several issues in this title. His style seems to fit the agrarian culture and the primitive, rural settings. The artist's brushwork is fluid and skillfully applied, especially in scenes of violence. This is arguably Ploog's most under-appreciated work of the 1970s. Rounding out the book is an adaption of the first film Planet of the Apes, which would later be reprinted in Adventures on the Planet of the Apes. This issue also includes artwork by George Tuska and Mike Esposito. Cover by Bob Larkin. This is 1 of 10 Planet of the Apes issues by Ploog. /// key 1st issue / Ploog gallery
