Ghost Rider v3 #35 |
5. Ghost Rider v3 #35, 1979 - The Ghost Rider races against Death himself, with other lives hanging in the balance. Considered a classic, the tale nonetheless opens with a mediocre splash page (mostly due to its inadequate inking). Fortunately, the story and artwork accelerates quickly thanks to Jim Starlin's precise layouts and Steve Leialoha's polished inking (see interior page below). Larger scenes, suggesting the expansiveness of the desert setting, are juxtaposed with small, carefully sequenced panels. Not only is Starlin's Ghost Rider one of his most exceptional works, but arguably the best drawn issue of the entire series. Other artists in this issue include Bob Budiansky and Joe Rubenstein. This is number 1 of 1 Ghost Rider issues with Starlin art and/or covers. This Marvel bronze age superhero comic is also one of my Top 10 Starlin comics.
