Neal Adams |
Avengers v1 #92, 1971 - After a long hiatus, Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America return to the Avengers.
Neal Adams prefaces his run on this title with this elegantly composed cover. The three returning heroes dominate the scene, their faces and stances conveying the grimness of their decision. Adams' excellent rendition of the characters (including his first Cap and Iron Man) is more realistic than previous artists, adding to the somber tone. Other artists in this bronze age comic include Sal Buscema and George Roussos. This is 1 of 5

I've always felt this was Adams' best Avengers cover. Great staging of the figures, and some nice dilapidated details in the background. It's also the only cover from his run on the title that doesn't suffer from the boxed-in bordered look of the early 20 cent Marvels.
Agreed. This cover also gave a preview of his work on the following issues (Avengers #93-96). Imagine a kid's delight when he (or she) bought these right off the newsstand.
